I have always been a fan of rock music, not too heavy, not too metallic, but the classics. Bands such as Queen, The Eagles, Led Zeppelin and Dire Straits just to name a few are never far away on my iPod. The 80’s were where my musical tastes were firmly established.
In January 2018 I stumbled across a video on youtube, It was a band made up of session musicians who had all come together to create the Classic Rock Show, fronted up by legendary guitarist Howie G. A bit more research and I discovered that they were playing at the Lowry Theatre in the next couple of weeks. What a fantastic night. Anyhow, roll on 12 months and thanks to Andy Kettle at CMP Live I ended up with a photo pass to get up close and personal and take some photographs of the band in action in 2019
This was high energy from the start. Opening the show with Zep’s Whole Lotta Love. Chris Ousey on vocals and Wayne Banks’s thundering bass line had the crowd up on their feet instantly. They kept the energy going be sliding straight into the Eagles’ One of these nights.
The hits kept coming one after the other, and being positioned down at the front, I was grateful to have remembered my foam ear protection. Above is Howie G playing my favourite from the night. It’s a bit of a mouthful as it is a cover version of Jimi Hendrix’s All Along the Watchtower written of course by Bob Dylan. I’ve never been a huge fan of this song, but I have never heard such an amazing sound come from a Fender Stratocaster like on this version. Video It’s safe to say its a firm favourite now!
The other lead guitarist is Jimmy Cole. When he is not playing guitar, he is a bit of a racing driver and has competed in several disciplines. Here’s a link to an interview with him - Interview
The band have a pool of very talented musicians, and often feature guest vocalists. Tonight we were treated to some stunning performances by Jess Harwood, lead singer of Fleetwood Mac tribute band - Rumours of Fleetwood Mac
Here’s a few more images from the show. It is absolutely one of the best concerts i have been to and I am already looking forward to them touring in 2020!
